Wastewater Operator I
Details: Upper Allen Township is seeking applicants for a certified/licensed operator to work at its Grantham Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mechanicsburg, PA. The primary responsibilities of this position are to achieve a high level of treatment in compliance with NPDES permit requirements and to sustain an excellent operation and maintenance program for the collection, conveyance, pumping and treatment facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the plant superintendent or other Sewer Department managers.
Essential Functions Work involves, but is not limited to operating process equipment utilizing control panels, computers and programmable logic control units, collecting samples, performing field tests, preparing chemical solutions and monitoring chemical supplies, performing routine and required lab tests, monitoring and observing operating conditions, recording observations and data, diagnosing operational problems and taking corrective actions. Other responsibilities include assisting with sludge (biosolids) processing, handling and disposal, performing preventive maintenance, lubrication, making equipment adjustments, performing basic troubleshooting of equipment, recommending solutions, and taking corrective actions, performing maintenance to treatment tanks and wet wells, and general maintenance of grounds and buildings. Additional duties include assisting with sewer system televising and completing and transmitting reports, assisting with operation of the sewer flusher/vacuum truck, performing manhole inspections, conducting flow monitoring, smoke and dye testing of sanitary sewers, assisting with PA One Call response actions, and assuring that all work is performed in a safe and professional manner.
Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent (minimum) State of Pennsylvania Class B,E, Subclass 1 and 4 Wastewater Certification Two (2) years plus experience in the operation of wastewater facilities or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities Valid PA Drivers’s License; CDL required within one (1) year of employment Operate Township vehicles and small equipment and use hand tools Perform manual work requiring dexterity; possess sufficient strength to lift objects up to 60 lbs. waist high and work under adverse weather conditions Knowledge and application of safe working practices using equipment such as gas detectors, breathing apparatus, harnesses, barricades, signs, tripod, cones, hand-held flags, etc. Operate a computer, understand basic functions of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and basic use of Township Geographic Information System (GIS) React promptly and efficiently in emergencies Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, contractors, engineers and Township officials Read and comprehend plans, instructions, equipment literature and technical publications
Comments: Typical work days are Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. Weekend and holiday work is alternated among plant staff with hours of 6:30 A.M. – 8:00 A.M. for wastewater sampling purposes only. Plant staff are also required to be on call for emergencies and for snow plowing when required.
